Barber Motorsport Park Promises No Picnic for Sports Car Racing Young Gun
BIRMINGHAM, AL, April 5, 2011 – Barber Motorsports Park is a pristine setting which does its name justice. However, Bryan Sellers knows it will be no walk in the park when he arrives at the Birmingham, AL-area race track for the April 9 Barber 200. The Braselton, GA-resident has raced here before and knows the lush grass and tree-lined course is deceiving; a very different view from behind the wheel than from the comfortable, spectator viewing mounds. Entered in his third Grand-Am-sanctioned Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) race of the season in the No. 33 Sail on Travel Inc./Vion-Hitachi Data Systems BMW M3 Coupe, Sellers and teammate Jade Buford (Brentwood, TN) will have a battle on their hands during Saturday’s two hour, 30-minute/200-mile race.
As Grand-Am’s primary support series, the CTSCC’s Grand Sport (GS) class provides some of the most evenly matched cars in the sport. The production car-based class puts a premium on every performance advantage that can be gained including bringing in a top professional driving talent like Sellers. Barber Motorsports Park adds to the pressure to “get it right”.
While the golf course-like surroundings of the north-Birmingham facility are extravagant by motorsport standards, the racing surface offers no such luxury. With 17 turns built into only 2.3-miles of track over undulating hills, the driver seldom has a chance to rest. The rapid-fire turns reward handling and the ability to “power off” the turn onto the straight-aways. The importance of getting the balance right is magnified by the 60 entries - across both the GS and Street Touring (ST) classes - which will fight for a piece of real estate here. Sellers, a former open wheel champion, will need to draw from his vast skills as one of sports car racing’s “young guns” to bring the Kintetic Motorsports prepared-BMW to the front of the field when the green flag falls at 11:30am (CT), Saturday.
Continuing his near-constant race schedule, Sellers will travel from Alabama to California for the April 16 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) at Long Beach. He will re-join Team Falken Tire teammate Wolf Henzler (Germany) on the streets of Long Beach for the first ALMS sprint race of the season in the No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.
The tape-delayed broadcast of the Barber 200 will air on SPEED Channel, April 16, at 2pm (ET). Live timing and scoring of the event can be found at www.Grand-Am.com.
Quotes
Bryan Sellers:
About the Barber 200: “I have had really strong races here at Barber. I have led almost every time I have been here. But, I have also had very bad luck at this track. I am hoping it turns around this weekend. Jade and I are certainly putting our full effort into that. We’re looking to make this track the place we turn our season around.”
About the BMW M3 at Barber Motorsports Park: “Historically the BMW has been a very strong car at Barber. To be good here you must have a car that is balanced well and is compliant over curbing. The E92 BMW [M3] seems to be very good at both of those things. Our only downfall will be the car lacks the torque of some of our competitors. Torque is very important at a place like Barber because you never have time to stretch your legs. “
About the GS Class: “GS has turned into a complete battle every single weekend, every single race and every single lap. There are so many good cars in the Series there can be no mistakes. You must be perfect in all aspects from speed to car prep to strategy.”
About Barber Motorsports Park: “Barber is by far the most beautiful venue in the country. It is very surreal to drive into the track and think that you are racing here. It seems more like you should be preparing yourself to wait in line for a Disney ride. Barber provides the fans with a chance to see beauty in the facility and pure muscle in the racing.”
